Doo-Wop on The Porch Returns

On June 12, Doo-Wop on The Porch started back up again since the pandemic.

“People have been bugging us (about Doo-Wop on The Porch),” Denny Black, the coordinator said.

Doo-Wop on The Porch started ten years ago at the Panera Bread in Lake Sumter Landing.

“That’s why we called it ‘on The Porch,'” the Village De La Vista resident explained.

The crowd was small at first, but over the years, more and more people attended the event. So, they had to change locations. Now, the event is held at the gazebo near Sonny’s BBQ.

During the weekly events, they cover some doo-wop history and have someone or a group preform some of their favorite songs. They also have a raffle for CDs, money and tickets to local performances.

It’s been almost a year since the Saturday event was held, and many people have passed away. Black listed the names of famous doo-wop singers that have passed during the performance such as BJ Thomas. He also listed the names of deceased entertainers who preformed in The Villages and people who regularly came to the event.

“In Motion” performed at Doo-Wop on The Porch. Forever Young will be the next to preform. Brenda Jacobson will preform on June 26 and Tim & Donna on July 3. On July 10, it’ll be open mic. For anyone interested in going to this weekly event, it starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays, and it’s open to everyone.
