Sumter County deputies capture inmate who escaped detention facility

Deputies have captured the inmate who escaped the Sumter County Detention Center Sunday, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect, Jospeh Brown, 39, escaped the facility while on a kitchen work detail at approximately 5 p.m. Following his escape, deputies and detectives began their search for Brown with the assistance of its K9 unit, drones, and helicopters from the department, as well as from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office’s Aviation Units, according to a statement from the department.

Brown was not jailed on violent charges, according to the department.

During the search, Brown was spotted on a doorbell camera stealing a white e-bike from a residence on North Jasper Road. With the help of law enforcement resources and tips from the community, deputies located Brown near County Road 675 in a pond, and took him back into custody.
