Villagers Keep Up Their Exercise Routine During the Pandemic

This pandemic has made everyone understand the importance of staying healthy and fit. As such, experts also stress that the best way to boost immunity is exercise.

For some fitness motivation, The Villages have Sheila and Randy Stalsberg. The couple recently moved to the Village of Fenney about six months back and is infatuated with the neighborhood and lifestyle.

Randy and Sheila try to maintain a daily routine of hopping on their bikes and pedaling to the outdoor fitness equipment by the Spanish Moss Recreation Area.

This routine allows them to stay fit and prevent too many off days as it may lead to soreness when you resume.

“It’s important to do slow, low repetitions if you’re just starting out,” Randy said.

“A tip I always have for people is to do a little at a time,” Sheila added.

The couple recently got electric bikes with forward movement assistance, which allows them to go for even longer rides.

“I have a recumbent bike, and Randy has a two-wheel standard e-bike,” Sheila said. “We’re trying to sell our other two bikes now that we’ve upgraded.”

They both enjoy riding down the paths to look at the flora and fauna.

“It’s funny. Sometimes the squirrels will drop acorns on our heads,” she laughed. “But since we wear helmets they bounce right off.”

The Stalsbergs moved here from Hawaii, so they are used to hot weather.

“We wear sun shirts, so we don’t have to apply as much SPF,” Shelia said. “We just apply it to our faces, knees and legs.”

“With sunglasses, helmet visors and gloves, most of our skin is shielded by the sun. If you don’t have sun proof clothes make sure you memorize SPF,” they both stressed.

They don’t have to go to a gym as the fitness equipment is laid right along their bike path, which makes it convenient to work on every major muscle of the body.

“We take turns on each of the machines,” Sheila said. “We trade back and forth with each other and whoever else might be there.”

The couple said the equipment helps them focus on muscle groups that don’t directly get sweated up during cycling.
