Sumter County Sheriff’s Office warns public of phone scam

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to remain vigilant with the emergence of a new phone scam.

The phone scam involves calls from someone — sometimes automated — claiming to be a deputy from the sheriff’s office. The scammer informs victims that to avoid arrest they must send money or gift cards. Calls have come from various phone numbers.

The sheriff’s department reminds the public that law enforcement agencies do not solicit payments in any form. If you receive such a call, know it is a scam, and do not send money or provide any personal information.

If you have questions regarding the authenticity of any law enforcement contact, call the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at 352-793-2621.
